What I learned when I was high.

In today’s world of touchdown dances, reality shows, and provocative, attention-starved, look-at-me celebrities, many of us can lose sight of what really matters. We tend see ourselves in the center of our own lives, and quite frankly, we see ourselves in the center of everyone else’s lives as well. “Me” always seems to be the focus. What if we could step back a few feet and realize that it wasn’t actually about “Me?”

It took about 30,000 feet for me to realize that...

A writer in the 19th century, Isaac Goldman, wrote, “There is that smaller world which is the stage, or there is the larger stage which is the world.” What if instead of basking in the limelight of the stage of our own world, we could realize that there is in fact a larger stage, The World? What if instead of focusing on “me” we could focus on the world?

Looking out of the airplane window at 30,000 feet, entire cities are just blurry splotches of light; mountains are simply just bumps. If such enormous things become so trivial, how much more trivial do we become?

Is this life really what matters? Is this small stage, our own lives, what it’s all about?

In Matthew 5:14, Jesus states that we are “the light of the world.” He does not say that we are the light so that we can be seen. He says we are the light so that the world can see.

What if living this life wasn’t just to go up and meet God at the end of it all, but what if it was to bring God down to earth so everyone could meet Him here? What would it look like to be a Christian not just to go up to heaven when we die, but to bring heaven to earth while we are still alive? That’s what really matters. That is the larger stage.
